Everything you need to know about the tuition fees vote
Today's the day. As we speak, students are lining up on the streets, and MPs are preparing to vote on government plans to raise tuition fees to up to £9,000.
Most Liberal Democrat MPs expected to vote for trebling of tuition fees.
In what is set to be a defining day for English universities and politics, most Liberal Democrat MPs are expected today to join their party leader, Nick Clegg, to force through a trebling of university tuition fees, in the face of what are likely to be angry student street protests and bitter recriminations at Westminster.
Vince Cable has defended the right of Liberal Democrat MPs to abstain, and the party's deputy leader, Simon Hughes, has hinted he might even vote against the tripling of costs to students.
Up to 40,000 university students and school pupils are expected to protest in London today. Students are gathering near University of London right now and will march towards the Houses of Parliament.
In the Commons, the tuition fees debate will start at around 12.15pm and the voting will start at around 5.15pm.
