Jim Brookes writes: Lord Flowers (obituary, 30 June) made a massive contribution to the general use of computers in Britain's universities and research institutions. His 1966 report, commissioned by Harold Wilson's government as part of its "white-hot technological revolution", succeeded in reducing the brain drain of our best researchers and scientists to the United States by ensuring the provision of equivalent and often better computing facilities within higher education and research establishments in the UK.
The implementation of his report ensured a framework for the provision of quality and professional computing services to be provided at a local and national level to academics and researchers across all disciplines. This framework has endured for almost half a century.
